4) What is a surge absorber?

A device protecting electronic equipment from surges (abnormal voltage) is called a Surge Protective Device (SPD). SPDs protect from surges entering between ① line to line, or ② line to ground.
An SPD has a high resistance so electricity generally doesn't flow through it, nor does it influence other electronic equipment. When there is a surge (abnormal voltage), the surge absorber instantly has low resistance to eliminate the surge and to protect the electronic equipment. When the surge has dissipated the surge absorber returns to high impedance.
